Day Tour to Al-Alamein & Alexandria

The city of Alexandria is Egypt’s second largest city, Stretching 20 km along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great. It remained the capital of Ptolemaic Egypt & Roman Byzantine Egypt for almost 1,000 years. Today , it is an important industrial center because of its natural gas & oil pipelines from Suez. It is also a popular tourist destination. It was best known for its famous Lighthouse , one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Its great Library was the largest in the ancient world , now replaced by a modern one.

After pick-up from the hotel in Alexandria. We head to  El-Alamein . It lies 105 km (65 miles) west of Alexandria. It is a small village on Egypt’s Mediterranean Coast. It was the site of a World War II battle on the 23rd October 1942 which changed the course of the North Africa Campaign in the Allies’ favour. Commemorated in El-Alamein War Museum with uniforms and tanks.

Desert plants surround El- Alamein War Cemetery’s headstones. Just outside town, the German War Memorial is a fortress-like structure with a central obelisk , built over a mass Grave. The Italian War Memorial is a tower inscribed inside with names of the dead. Your first stop will be at the Military Museum including displays of weapons, military garb and tanks.

Descriptions of the actions of Montgomery, Rommel and the others participated in the battle are also on display. Continue to visit the WW II Cemeteries, located on the west of the town , on a small peninsula overlooking the sea. The citadel like cemeteries is the final resting place for Common Wealth, Greek, Italian and German soldiers.

Afterward , we drive to Alexandria where you will see Pompey’s Column 27 m (89ft) high, which was a Roman triumphal column and the only known free-standing column that was not composed of drums. It Is made of red granite and was part of the serapeum complex.

Then we proceed to see Qaitbey Fort, situated on the tip of the eastern harbor as a defensive fortress on the sea cost. It was erected in 1480 AD on the exact site of the famous lighthouse of Alexandria, which was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Afterward , we head to the Catacombs of kom El-Shoqafa ( mound of shards), which consists of a series of tombs of the pharaonic funeral cult with Greek and Roman influence consisting of three levels dug into the rock to a depth of 35m (115ft). It is the largest Greek-Roman necropolis in Egypt from the 2nd century AD. After finishing the day tour, you will return to hotel.
